Happiness - What Is It? Positive Psychology is for All of Us Today and Tomorrow

Although there are various theories about what constitutes a happy and successful life, it can be said that all of them share a similar understanding of human psychology.

Positive psychology is the study of human happiness and its relation to a person's psychology, attitude, values, beliefs, and interpersonal interactions. Positive psychology emphasizes both individual and social well-being. This type of psychology helps us in making important decisions and also understand our own behavior.

The quest for happiness goes back to the origins of our species. We shared the same survival instincts and a need to survive. Over time however, different cultures and societies have developed their own unique ways to deal with problems. In this process, various concepts like the need to belong, the need for security, the need for power and the need for approval were shaped. These concepts still shape the way we think today.

Positive psychologists also view happiness as having a social element. People seek other individuals who they can depend on or who they can share their happiness with. Individuals are drawn to others who are content and have positive attitudes towards life. Having a group of friends or companionship also provides the individual with a sense of belongingness. However, being alone is also an integral component of happiness.

In addition, happiness is also related to other factors such as the level of physical activities and independence. Being able to pursue one's dreams and go after one's goals provides the individual with a fulfilling and meaningful existence. On the other hand, if an individual's dreams and goals are thwarted and cannot be realized, he/she may experience deep feelings of unhappiness. This unhappiness is part of the cycle of depression and is quite common amongst depressed people.

Another factor that increases the level of happiness is a sense of self-worth. People who value themselves enough to know that they are worth something are happier than those who do not think this way. They also tend to be more assertive and confident in life. As a result, they feel that they deserve good treatment and they become better persons. Having a supportive network of friends and acquaintances also helps the person to feel that he/she is important and valuable.

Positive psychologists also believe that happiness is a state of mind. If an individual is depressed, he/she tends to stay depressed for a long time. On the other hand, if the individual is happy, he/she can enjoy life to the fullest and is not likely to dwell on his/her misery for too long. The person is also likely to achieve his/her goals in life and live a productive and meaningful life.
