Counseling services are about making positive changes in a person’s life.  A primary role of a behavioral health provider is to help their client to make changes leading to greater life balance and a move to improved wellness and quality of life.

Positive Change is Possible

For positive change to occur, it requires a collaboration between the counselor and the client. Thus, clarifying the problem(s) and identifying resources to help reduce dissatisfaction in life are critical to success. Put simply, what are the goals and objectives of the work?

Challenges to Change

A person’s life may be disrupted by circumstances that they wish were different. This may include loss of employment, a divorce, returning to work after parental leave, new or better career options, the loss of a loved one, a trauma, or planning for being an empty nester or retirement.   There are many challenges we all face in life.  That is normal.  But, how we navigate these challenges can make all the difference in our life balance, happiness and wellness.

There may also be a set of circumstances that you wish were present in your life but are now absent.  This could include having a life partner, better education, new skill sets, having new or other friends, developing a new career, moving to a new home, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Are You Ready to Change Your Life?

Below are some questions that you may ask yourself to provide greater clarity to your life purpose.

A.     What circumstances are present in your life now that are contributing to dissatisfaction\, frustration or stress?

a.     How is your health?

b.     Are you sleeping well getting 7-9 hours per night?

c.      How is your social life?

d.     Do you have any difficulties with your children, spouse or family?

 

B.     Review the above and describe why each circumstance leads to stress or dissatisfaction?

a.     Have health problems prevented activity you enjoy?

b.     Does your sleep result in daytime tiredness, irritability, lack of focus?

c.      Are people in your life judgmental?

d.     Are there needs that are unmet in my family?

 

C.     What are the circumstances in your life you wish were present and would increase your sense of fulfillment?

a.     I used to feel X and want to feel Y.

b.     Are you getting enough fitness time?

c.      Do you need more me time?

d.     Do you need more time with family or friends?

e.     Do you want to feel more fulfilled in your job/career?

D.    Make a list of activities that, if now in your life, would give you a greater sense of fulfillment and life-balance.  ___________________________________________________________________
